It was beyond warm outside. It was what, 55 degrees out? Jack was used to no such thing. Sure, spring had just started, but still. He felt like a new person or something. He unbuttoned his jacket, trying to hide the smile that was plastered across his face. He loved the spring. He loved the winter, but when it came spring, everything felt new. He loved to pretend that anything that happened in the past season was through, done, gone, and that he could start fresh. Too bad other people didn't think that way.
Settling that the park would be the best place to be out in public, Jack walked himself there. The sun was actually bright today, and in a position where you could actually see it from every direction. He liked Boston better. More cold, more sun, less...tall buildings. But New York would have to do. He found himself not really wanting to sit just yet. Waking his legs up, he walked down to the water, which was actually a good distance. All around him people were buzzing with happiness. Kids were running around with baskets in their hands, searching for this year's Easter eggs. A group of younger boys played soccer rather rough, but were having a good time with it.
A few yard to his left, a family was having a picnic. The parents were young, and so were the children. Jack tried to keep his smile up, and he tried not to stare. They all looked so happy. The daughter was being smuggled by her father's arms, and the son by his mother's. They had parents. The couple looked into each other's eyes longingly, before kissing quickly. Jack didn't know what that was like, either. His mother was never married; she always said Jack and Derek would be the only men in her life. She would occasionally go out with a friend, but nothing serious ever happened.
Jack shook the thoughts out of his head, deciding that he should at least try and be happy. He reached the water, and leaned against the banister that blocked it off. The wind was high down here, and it barely stung Jack's face. There were a few boats out, but not many. Looking behind his shoulder, Jack didn't see anyone really familiar, which was strange. He decided he would have to find something to entertain him.

That park was the center of young Jack's attention. It was the ultimate place to be. Young or old, if you were cool, you were there. The park was divided into two sections: the basketball courts, and the playground. The little kids played around on the jungle gym; it was the safest park in the city. The older guys played basketball; rough and tough and meaning business. The park was not a place you wanted to be at night.
Jack was there with Derek, and they were pretty young. Derek was probably 17, so Jack 10. Whenever Derek went to the park with his friends, Jack begged and pleaded for him to let him go. Derek never wanted to, but Rose always made him. It was late this time; around nine or ten. No matters it was a school night. It didn't mind to these kids. Derek said he had important business to take care of, and that Jack would have to keep his mouth shut.
Jack tried and tried, but he was just so curious. The older boys were handing around little bags of white powder. Jack had no clue what it was. When Derek caught him staring, he told Jack to butt out. And that's when one addiction started.
Jack was thrown out of his dream by a soft, quiet voice. He whirled around, to see Jordan standing almost behind him. He tried to contain his smile, but it didn't work too well. "Hey," he laughed, hugging her tight, and giving her a quick kiss on the cheek. God, she was adorable.
"It's OK," he said laughing, realizing he was still holding her waist. He brought his arm back quickly, and shoved them in his back pockets. Dammit. No cigarettes. At least with a smoke, he would have something to do with his hands. "How have you been?" he asked, realizing he most likely sounded socially challenged.
